From the men’s perspective, women have always belonged in the kitchen. Since the early years, men were hunters while women were mothers and took care of the home where they lived. «Masculinity pertains to male dominance as femininity pertains to female subordination,” [1] says the writer Jeffreys. Being a mother is a job that requires a lot of effort so there is little time left for work. And it has been like that for a long time, so why change it now?
«Manliness consists not in bluff, bravado or loneliness.» [2] The idea we have of men – and what it means to be «manly»- needs to change to let through the idea of women being equal to men in every aspect regarding their professional area. It might seem, from the men’s perspective, that letting through such ideas are worthless and nonsense. And the problem might be that we think «men have inherent qualities that make them more suitable than woman for certain types of work«[3] but that is a myth that needs to be righted. Men state that taking care of children is more important than work or that women should not hope -nor try- to be like men, but it is not a question of «this OR that», it is an answer of «this AND that». Reality shows that women are capable of doing far more than what they are expected, being able to manage being both a mother and a professional in their work area.
From Venus
Even today, women do not feel entirely equal to men in any aspect. In our minds, there is always a «lack of something» that makes women unworthy of success. This mentality needs to change to allow women all over the world to stand up and fight for their basic civil rights and equal opportunities. Women have to fight against not having a chance because of their gender.
The female gender has become stronger in their fight to be a little more like men. If we imagine a woman at the top of any profession, we imagine someone bold, outstandingly brilliant and energetic, and for many cases it is true, but even when not all women are like this, they still have a flame inside their hearts ready to burn everything down for a chance at success. With determination, every woman is capable of reaching the unreachable. And a way to do this is by setting goals and not giving up, fighting to be that outstanding woman that will sit in the chair of their CEO office in a big corporation.
Talking about chairs, Sheryl Sandberg defends something very important, which is that women need to believe they can «sit at the table» to reach those places. There are still many things to change in the world, but we live in a place where things are possible if you just believe. Never should a woman think of herself to be inferior to anyone else if she is to reach the highest levels of success.
Being a businesswoman and a mother is not impossible to balance. Being a mother will always come first to everything else, but it is important to fulfill your own dream and desire too. If men can accept women as equals, we can build a better future for our daughters to live in.
From Earth
Men and women, together changing the world with equal rights and opportunities. It seems like an 1870s dream, men giving women the same chance they have to succeed, but we are privileged to live this reality. And the reason now seems obvious: men need women because they complement each other. In their work areas, in the house, or any other place, men and women have always been partners to right the other’s wrong. This is the key to a better world: together.
